Poker Movies - The Cincinnati Kid

Though movies are not exactly an accurate reflection of reality, we have to admit that we can pick up a thing or two from them. More so, we can have a good time while we are it. The same thing goes for poker movies. We see the exceptional highs and lows of a poker game in these movies. We see brilliant moves that may not ever happen in real life. Yet that does not discount the fact that we can have a great time and maybe learn something from these movies. So here is the first part of a poker movies series I've been writing...

The Cincinnati Kid

The Cincinnati Kid is one of the classic poker movies. Made in 1965, it was directed by Norman Jewison. The movie was actually based on a novel written by Richard Jessup. In the movie, Steve McQueen plays The Kid. It also features Edward G. Robinson as Lancey Howard. Set in Louisiana, the movie's theme song is by Ray Charles. Not a bad combination, isn't it? A word of warning before we go on - spoilers ahead!

The two main characters mentioned above are in two opposite positions in the world of poker. The Kid is a young poker player who has his whole future ahead of him while Howard (nicknamed The Man) is a seasoned poker master. The Kid learns that The Man is in town so he decides to call him out for a poker game. Another key character is Shooter, The Kid's friend. He plays the role of the dealer in the game.

With four other players, The Kid and The Man start out the big game. A large part of the movie shows poker action as the players drop out one by one. Towards the end, only The Kid and The Man are left as they play each other heads up. The twist lies in the fact that Slade, another poker player who was beaten badly by The Man has blackmailed Shooter into cheating in The Kid's favor. The Kid figures this out and browbeats Shooter into dealing it straight. After a break in the game, Shooter gets replaced by another dealer. Despite this, The Kid continues to beat The Man, rattling the latter. The last hand ends with a climactic (or anti-climactic, depending on your point of view) win by The Man.

The movie was released in DVD last year and features various extras such as a commentary track by the director, some selected scenes from Celebrity Poker Showdown, and more. You can get this DVD from most any store online or offline.

To end this post, here are some quotable quotes from the movie...

"It's a pleasure to meet someone who understands that to the true gambler, money is never an end in itself, it's simply a tool, as a language is to thought." - The Man

"Gets down to what it's all about, doesn't it? Making the wrong move at the right time." - The Man
